The BUAFL has the safety of its athletes as its highest priority. It is mandatory for teams to have suitable insurance to ensure that their players have cover should they require it following an incident in either training or competition.

A number of universities have highlighted that they are able to access insurance cover through their respective athletic unions / student unions and therefore, do not need to purchase additional cover through the BUAFL.

The BUAFL therefore, would like to make clear the following:

  • That it is mandatory for teams to have insurance cover.
  • That the BUAFL will recognise insurance cover that is not purchased through the League but only if it is of sufficient quality that it matches or supercedes that which is offered by the League.
  • The BUAFL will only consider a team who do not purchase cover through the BUAFL fully insured on the receipt of a copy of their insurance policy (complete with number) and a cover letter identifying that the team has cover signed by one of the following:
  • An Athletic Union / Student Union President (or equivalent)
  • An authorised Athletic Union / Student Union staff member
  • A representative of the insurance company
  • The documentation has to be sent to the same address as the CRS forms.

Levels of Cover

  • The BUAFL recognises the following two levels of cover as sufficient:
  • BUSA Gold
  • BUSA Platinum

Financial Implications

Upon receipt of the documentation above a revised payment submission form will be issued to those Universities who qualify for the exemption from the league provided insurance.

There are financial implications if a team has purchased insurance through their university. Individuals who have cover will be charged a fee of £25 on their CRS application.

Those who have already paid, the BUAFL is currently investigating appropriate ways to reimburse teams / athletes.

Disclaimer

With some BUAFL teams being multi-institutional there could be implications for the way in which universities cover players from other institutions under their name. It is important that the teams check whether external students are covered under their policy. This needs to be highlighted in the submitted cover letter mentioned above
